Content

The course gives a hands on introduction to specific advanced methods in plant pathology such as:

  • The use of fluorescent reporters with filamentous fungi (fungal transformation and advanced microscope techniques) (bje/hjo)

  • Plant disease diagnostics based on symptoms, pathogen morphology, diagnostic keys and taxonomy (hjo/bje)

  • Molecular plant disease diagnostics (bje/hjo)

  • Methods used for studying induced resistance (hjo)

  • Methods in biological control

    • Screening and evaluation of Biological Control Agents (BCAs) (meni/bje)

    • Monitoring for BCAs in the environment (meni)

  • Real time PCR for studying Plant-microbe interactions (mari/dbc)

  • Gene knock-out in fungi and their effects on interactions with plants or other organisms (htc)

These techniques are taught in specific modules.

Normally a student will chose one of these modules but may combine as appropriate.

Learning outcome

The course gives a hands on introduction to advanced methods in plant pathology of direct relevance for the individual research project.

Literature

Individual for specific modules.

Teaching and learning methods
Apprenticeship in a research group, literature discussion, data analysis and interpretation.

Lecturers

Birgit Jensen (bje@plen.ku.dk)
Mari-Anne Newman (mari@plen.ku.dk )
Hans Lyngs Jørgensen (hjo@plen.ku.dk )
Hans Thordal-Christensen (htc@plen.ku.dk )
Mette Haubjerg Nicolaisen (meni@plen.ku.dk )

Workload
The work load depends on the module size, for 6 ECTS it will be approx. 150 hrs but can be made larger as this is an ad hoc course. Modules can be combined or taken separately.
