Content

PLEASE NOTE: COURSE DESCRIPTION TO BE MODIFIED SLIGHTLY DURING MARCH 2018! Molecular biology techniques are increasingly used in Food Microbiology. These techniques allow for very specific species and strain identification, growth independent population determination and quantification, as well as quantification of gene expression.

Statistical background for cluster analysis, and practical use of cluster analysis programme (Bionumerics).
Introduction to public sequence databases and use of bioinformatics for design of PCR primers and probes.
Species identification and strain typing using DNA finger-prints (16S rRNA gene sequencing, rep-PCR, PFGE).
Culture independent detection and quantification of Food microorganisms (PCR and real-time PCR).
Culture independent detection of diversity of microbial populations (DGGE/T-RFLP/sample tagged pyrosequencing).
Expression of virulence genes under food-like conditions (Reverse-transcriptase real-time PCR).

Learning outcome

Molecular biology techniques are increasingly used in Food Microbiology. These techniques allow for very specific spe-cies and strain identification, growth independent popula-tion determination and quantification, as well as quantification of gene expression.
The aim of the course is to give PhD students with limited molecular biology experience theoretical and practical knowledge in selected molecular biology techniques related to typing and identification, growth independent techniques and gene expression.

Literature

Curriculum will be uploaded app. 1 month before start of course.

Teaching and learning methods
Lectures and practical exercises The course consists of a 10 workdays (8-17) theoretical and practical course and a theoretical project with relevance to the PhD project. Report for theoretical project must be delivered before 14 September.
