Aim and content
This is a generic course. This means that the course is reserved for PhD students at the Graduate School of Health and Medical Sciences at UCPH. Anyone can apply for the course, but if you are not a PhD student at the Graduate School, you will be placed on the waiting list until enrollment deadline. After the enrolment deadline, available seats will be allocated to the waiting list.

The course is free of charge for PhD students at Danish universities (except Copenhagen Business School). All other participants must pay the course fee.

How to conduct interdisciplinary research

Learning objectives
A student who has met the objectives of the course will be able to:

1. Reflect on the difference between interdisciplinary and classic monodisciplinary collaborations
2. Understand the basics needed to start a successful interdisciplinary collaboration
3. At all phases of an interdisciplinary collaboration, identify and analyse challenges and barriers, as well as gain insight into possible solutions
4. Assess publication and funding possibilities and strategies for interdisciplinary research

Content
Most complex fields of study are best approached by combining the strengths of different research disciplines. However, entering an interdisciplinary collaboration can be overwhelming, as collaboration partners often have different criteria for data and focus as well as different strengths and shortcomings. Therefore, all phases of an interdisciplinary collaboration from project planning to publication, most include a much higher degree of communication, data exchange and trust than classic monodisciplinary collaborations.
Through case studies and group work, students will learn how to analyze data from different research disciplines and engage in an interdisciplinary discussion about their findings. Students will be discussing the optimal conditions of all phases of collaboration and pitfalls that may arise. Finally, strategies of publishing and funding interdisciplinary projects will be discussed.

Participants
This course is for PhD students from all (inter)disciplinary backgrounds who are conducting interdisciplinary research, investigating an interdisciplinary topic, or who want to know more about interdisciplinarity.
