Aim and content This is a generic course. This means that the course is reserved for PhD students at the Graduate School of Health and Medical Sciences at UCPH. Anyone can apply for the course, but if you are not a PhD student at the Graduate School, you will be placed on the waiting list until enrollment deadline. After the enrolment deadline, available seats will be allocated to the waiting list. The course is free of charge for PhD students at Danish universities (except Copenhagen Business School). All other participants must pay the course fee. Learning objectives A student who has met the objectives of the course will be able to: 1. Understand and explain the rationales and foundations of multi-methods research. 2. Explain and compare core multi-methods designs. 3. Describe and explain approaches to planning, data collection, analysis and reporting of multi-methods research. 4. Discuss advantages and challenges in conducting multi-methods research. Content The purpose of this course is to introduce students to the foundations and underlying rationales for multiple methods research; to present core multi-methods designs with a focus on planning, data collection, and analysis; to introduce advantages and challenges of engaging with multi-methods research in the fields of health and medical sciences; and finally to presents approaches to reporting different types of multi-methods research. Participants The course is relevant to students using or planning to use a combination of qualitative and quantitative methods in their studies. Knowledge of basic qualitative and quantitative methods is required. Relevance to graduate programmes The course is relevant to PhD students from the following graduate programmes at the Graduate School of Health and Medical Sciences, UCPH: All graduate programmes All graduate programmes Public Health and Epidemiology Language English. Form A combination of lectures, project presentations, peer-feedback, group work, and discussions. Emphasis will be placed on cases represented in the studies undertaken by PhD students participating in the course. Participants are required to submit a one page application upon registering for the course. This should include the following elements: title of the PhD project and the student, aim of the project, and methodology including how mixed methods are used/incorporated into the study design. A course assignment is handed out to students at the end of the second course day. In order to pass the course, this assignment should be completed individually followed by a presentation and discussion during the final day of the course with feedback from teachers and students. Literature: central chapters from the following book are required readings: John W. Creswell and Vicki L. Plano Clark. Designing and Conducting Mixed Methods Research. 3rd Edition. SAGE Publications, 2018. Additional papers on methods and mixed methods study cases will be distributed and discussed.
