Aim and content
This course is free of charge for PhD students at Danish universities (except Copenhagen Business School). All other participants must pay the course fee.
Anyone can apply for the course, but if you are not a PhD student, you will be placed on the waiting list for the course until enrollment deadline. After the deadline of enrollment, available seats will be allocated to students on the waiting list.

Learning objectives
A student who has met the objectives of the course will be able to:

1. Describe the human ubiquitin system with respect to the full range of components, mechanisms of conjugation and de-conjugation and overall functional consequences of such modification.
2. Design experiments to evaluate ubiquitin and UBL conjugation by proteomic and biochemical approaches.
3. Relate the ubiquitin system to a wide variety of cell biological processes.
4. Critically evaluate original research papers relating to ubiquitin and ubiquitin-like modifiers.

The ubiquitin system. Components, mechanisms and functions.
De-conjugating enzymes in the ubiquitin system
Ubiquitin-mediated protein degradation and protein quality control
Atypical ubiquitin chains
Ubiquitin like modifiers
The ubiquitin system and the cell cycle
The ubiquitin system and the DNA damage response
The ubiquitin system and inflammation
The ubiquitin system and autophagy
The Ubiquitin system as target for drug discovery

The topics will be covered through lectures from international and local speakers. The topics will be further explored through journal clubs with participants presenting and discussing papers. The course will have a strong focus on mechanistic aspects of the ubiquitin signalling but also cover its relevance in a number of human diseases.

Participants
PhD students for which a thorough knowledge of the ubiquitin system is useful.
A good understanding of cell biology and biochemistry is a prerequisite.
