Aim and content
Tailor-made course for PhD-students from the Research Group for International Nutrition and Health (RGINH), NEXS, working on collaborative studies in Africa. Since both local and Danish PhD-students spend long time on field work, this course can be brought to them, and conducted with one or two teachers from RGINH and/or from the collaborating university.

General course objectives:

• To enable the student to critically review scientific papers in this field
• To enable the students to define, understand and use epidemiological terms and concepts
• To enable the student to evaluate the nutritional methods used
• To enable the students to engage in scientific discussions
• To enable the student plan for the analysis and presentation of own data

Learning outcome
Learning objectives: A student who has met the objectives of the course will be able to:

• Plan the analysis and presentation of data from a study on undernutrition, taking into consideration bias, confounding, mediation, effect modification, power, multiplicity, loss to follow-up, etc.
• Critically review a scientific paper and evaluate strength and weaknesses, in relation to study design, validity, such as bias and confounding, and generalizability
• Discuss the importance of research for public health and clinical practice

Teaching and learning methods
Lectures, exercises in group, journal club in pairs, discussion in plenum, use of internet- based clickers.

Workload
A full-time, five-day course, with considerable reading material and a written report (a peer-review) to be submitted after the course.
