Aim and content
Anyone can apply for the course, but if you are not a PhD student, you will be placed on the waiting list for the course until enrollment deadline. After the deadline of enrollment, available seats will be allocated to students on the waiting list.

This course is free of charge for PhD students at Danish universities (except Copenhagen Business School), and for PhD students at graduate schools in the other Nordic countries. All other participants must pay the course fee.

COURSE DESCRIPTION
This course is meant as a basic introduction to the structures, biosynthesis and function of complex carbohydrates. Protein glycosylation in eukaryotes is one of the most common forms of posttranslational modification, and carbohydrates on glycoproteins and glycolipids are involved in pleiotropic biological functions. During the course the glycosylation process in various eukaryotic cells will be illustrated, with particular focus on recombinant expression of glycoproteins. The course is organized in collaboration with The University in Lund and both lectures and “hands on” practical laboratory work will take place at the respective universities. The course will give insight to the structure and function of carbohydrate binding proteins and give examples of their role in normal and disease situations. The practical course will involve work with recombinant purified glycosyltransferase enzymes that will be used for in vitro glycosylation reactions. The sub-cellular compartment for glycosylation processes will be illustrated via immunocytochemical approaches using monoclonal antibodies against a panel of the estimated more than hundred human glycosyltransferases. The practical course will include “hands-on” use of reagents (lectins, antibodies, enzymes) and methods (chromatography, mass spec.) used to characterize carbohydrates. A deeper and broader theoretical understanding of important biological functions of carbohydrates and glycoproteins will be presented via lectures by national and international experts in the field, with particular emphasis on the relation between glycosylation defects and human diseases.

Course title
Glycobiology

Learning objectives
The objectives of the course are to give the student a basic introduction to the structures, biosynthesis and function of complex carbohydrates. In addition, the course will give insight to the structure and function of carbohydrate binding proteins and give examples of their role in normal and disease situations.
A student who has met the objectives of the course will be able to:
a. Describe the major mammalian glycosylation pathways
b. Describe the biosynthetic complexity of the major glycosylation pathways
c. Describe ways of identifying the most common mammalian glycan structures

The following topics are covered on the course:
General introduction to glycobiology, glycotechnology and glycogenetics, glycan function, glycosylation and diseases, carbohydrate binding molecules and glycan analysis,
