Content
This is a 5-day PhD-course that provides an overview of energy balance in humans in relation to the regulation of body weight. Topics will cover various aspects of diet, physical activity, appetite, body composition, obesity, weight loss, as well as novel factors that can affect energy intake and expenditure such as adipose tissue and gut hormones, circadian rhythmicity, exercise, and dietary macronutrients. The course also focuses on the available methodologies used to assess the various aspects of energy balance in humans.

Learning outcome
At the end of this course, the students:
- Will be able to describe the concept of energy balance in relation to body weight regulation
- Will be aware of the factors that may directly or indirectly affect energy balance in humans
- Will be able to translate lifestyle and hormonal changes into shifts in energy balance
- Will be aware of the advantages and limitations of various methodologies used to evaluate dietary intake, appetite, and energy expenditure

Teaching and learning methods
Teaching will be in the form of lectures, student presentations, group work, and discussions. Students will also have the opportunity to participate in small experiments designed to evaluate some aspects of energy balance regulation.
