Aquaculture Economics
The course is an ad hoc course for the full degree PhD student, designed to introduce them to the theoretical foundation for and empirical applications of different subjects within aquaculture economics. This will form the basis for them to choose the relevant approach for their sub-area of their PhDs on aquaculture economics. The course will provide the PhD students with a solid theoretical foundation and the associated empirical methods.
We further ask for approval of the course as an international specialist PhD course.
The reading list is shown below. Based on that it is suggested that the course provide 5 ECTS points.
The first part of the course consists of reading the relevant literature and presents it at weekly meetings. The literature is selected among seminal and principal international refereed journal articles to describe how the theoretical foundation of economics of aquaculture and the applications of economic disciplines in aquaculture have developed within sub-areas. The sub-areas of aquaculture economics included are 1) Production economics, 2) Environmental externalities and regulation, and 3) Market structure, demand, international trade and trade policy. The second part consists of choosing an approach within a sub-area and develop it so that it fits their PhD subject.
Course activities consist of three elements:
Reading of the extensive reading list and write a short summary of the state of the art of the literature, see below
Meetings with and presentations for course supervisor. The PhD student can ask about the theory and empirical methods and present their own reflections on the relevance of the theory and the empirical methods for their own research
Preparation of a course report focusing on relevant theory and methods for own research.
Assessment:
The course is assessed as "pass" or "fail" on the basis of the quality of the insights gained and reflected in the independent work to formulate a theoretical basis and develop an empirical approach in a report that is relevant in relation to the student’s own PhD project.
Learning Objectives:
The central themes of the course are the theoretical foundation of and the methodologies and techniques applied within each of the sub-areas of aquaculture economics (see literature below). The skills and competences acquired from this course are necessary in order to obtain an overview of the theoretical foundation and empirical applications in aquaculture economics and to provide the four PhD students with deeper understanding of the sub-area they want to develop in each their PhDs. For Takibur Rahman, Sandip Mitra and Venticia Hukom, application of production economics in aquaculture is the main focus area, and for Isaac Ankemah-Yeboah, Afjal Hossain and Imranul Islaam, market, trade and value chain issues is his main focus area. Having successfully completed the course the participant is expected to be able to:
Knowledge:
Explain the development of the theoretical foundation for and methodologies applied on aquaculture based on production economics, environmental externalities and regulation, and market structure, demand, international trade and trade policy.
Reflect on the relevance and limitations of it in relation to their PhDs.
Skills:
Identify relevant adjustments in specific settings
Competences:
Assess the relevance and limitations of the use of the different approaches in specified fields of aquaculture
Discuss scientific and political disagreements in relation to sustainable aquaculture growth.
