Aim and content
This course is free of charge for PhD students at Danish universities (except Copenhagen Business School), and for PhD students at graduate schools in the other Nordic countries. All other participants must pay the course fee.
Anyone can apply for the course, but if you are not a PhD student at a Danish university, you will be placed on the waiting list until enrollment deadline. This also applies to PhD students from Nordic countries. After the enrollment deadline, available seats will be allocated to applicants on the waiting list.
Learning objectives
A student who has met the objectives of the course will be able to:
1. Describe the molecular basis of CRISPR and Transposon Directed Insertion Site Sequencing (TraDIS) techniques
2. Assess the usefulness of these tools for molecular studies of bacteria as well as for technological applications
3. Account for the limitations of these gene editing techniques
4. Carry out gene editing in bacteria using CRISPR and TraDIS
5. Understand the role of CRISPR/Cas as an immune system in bacteria
Content
How do the latest cutting-edge gene editing techniques such as CRISPR and TraDIS work?
How can they be applied in bacteria?
Do you wish to learn how to use them in real life in your lab?
How relevant are they in the microbiology field?
Where have they been applied so far and which is the future?
Do you want to meet and interact with the CRISPR pioneers?
All these topics will be covered and discussed in the course which will include several integrated tools:
1) lectures on how both techniques work and what they can be used for with special focus on bacteria. Lecturers will visit us from SNIPR-Biome; a CRISPR company, scientists from the pioneering groups on CRISPR and top scientists working on TraDIS,
2) lab practises which will complement the theoretical knowledge on both techniques and will give you hands-on experience with how these techniques are applied in bacteria,
3) moreover, knowledge beyond the lab will be acquired thanks to the use of virtual labs simulating real lab work, where among others, sample preparation for Next Generation Sequencing (TraDIS-related) will be performed,
4) a documentary on CRISPR will also be screened,
5) finally, through journal clubs we will analyse results from works where CRISPR and TraDIS techniques are used and we will discuss the derived high impact on the microbial field and beyond.
Participants
Students enrolled require a basic knowledge of microbiology and molecular microbiology.
