Workload

The school will consist of lectures and exercises arranged by leading experts within the field of inverse problems.

3 ECTS points are awarded for full participation in the summer school which includes bringing a poster.

Formalities
•Bring a poster, ideally related to inverse problems. The poster should be no larger than A0 in portrait mode (88cm wide x 126cm tall).
•Pitch your poster before the poster session. The pitch is a 1 minute presentation with 1 or 2 slides. The time limit is strict!
•Present your poster at the poster session.

Poster printing will not be available at the venue. Make sure to print your poster before departure!

Content

Subject area
An inverse problem is a problem concerning the cause of an effect, such as finding the sharp version of a blurred image or noisy image, reconstructing of a 3-dimensional image from a set of 2-dimensional projections as in computed tomography, estimating the motion field of objects from a film. Inverse problems are counterparts to forward problems, and typically the forward problem is well-posed and easy to solve, while the inverse is ill-posed with no guarantee of existence, uniqueness, or stability of the solution or solutions.

Typical solutions involve parametrized models from the knowledge of the problem, by learning causal-effect relations, or by regularization.

Preparation before the course

The students will be expected to read a set of given research articles on inverse problems in image processing prior to attending the course.

The students are expected to write a report or submit a poster which details their research with a view towards applying deep generative models to their own research.

This course will feature lectures before lunch with exercises to be carried out after lunch.

The course will focus on the following aspects of inverse problems:
• Characterization of key aspects of an inverse problem
• Mathematical and numerical approaches for finding solutions for inverse problems
• Characterization of properties of solutions to inverse problems Learning outcome: Upon completing this course, the students should be able to • Identify inverse problems and describe their key properties
• Model problems relevant to their area of research
• Know how to solve the problems by different modelling approaches
• Be aware of current open problems in the area of inverse problems
