This course consists of online workshop sessions over two days: 18/5 & 20/5 -2021 from 8:30 to 12:30 and participation on both days is required to receive credit.

Description
Academic publishing is a cornerstone in any research career and the foundation for how universities and funders evaluate the researchers.
This workshop is designed to address the opportunities and challenges PhD students face, when getting ready to publish or publishing their research as journal articles (or monographs) and data publications. The aim of the course is to provide the PhD students with knowledge, skills and tools for publishing their research openly and responsibly while fulfilling the demands of their university, their funders and their research community.

The workshop will cover:

• Copyright in publishing
• Creative Commons licenses
• Open access publishing
• Responsible metrics and evaluation of researchers
• Research impact and evaluation
• Management and optimization of researcher profiles
• Data management and the FAIR principles

Participants will also have the opportunity to put forward their questions and problems for discussion. Active participation and exchange of ideas are encouraged.

Learning Objectives

After the course participants are able to:

• Choose an appropriate (open) publication model
• Interpret terminology and rights from publishers
• Use bibliometric indicators responsibly and strategically to make their research visible in applications for research funding or research positions
• Increase the visibility of your researcher profile, publications and research data by applying tools shown in the workshop
• Use cumulative knowledge from the workshop to publish responsibly
• Spar with supervisors and others in the development of research and publication procedures

Workshop format
The workshop is a combination of presentations, discussions, teaching cases and hands-on activities.

Preparation and workload
This is a 1 ECTS course run over 2 days, 4 hours per day. 1 ECTs is the equivalent of 21 working hours, which includes a maximum of 14 hours of preparation. As a participant you are required to:

• complete a digital survey containing preparatory questions that must be filled in one week before the start of the workshop. The survey will be sent to the email you use to register for the workshop. In order to receive the ECTS credit you must fill out and submit the survey. Expect to use 1 hour on the survey.
• before the workshop, read the curriculum and complete the required assignments, about 10 hours preparation in total. The curriculum will be sent to the email you used to register for the course.
• complete the small homework assignment, which should take no more than 3 hours. In order to receive the 1 ECTS credit you must send your homework assignment to phdcourses@kb.dk within 5 working days from the final workshop day. The homework assignment will be introduced during the course.

Target group
PhD students from SCIENCE and SUND, University of Copenhagen. Academic staff (VIP) and PhD students from other universities are also welcomed, however 80% of the places on the course are reserved for PhD students from the University of Copenhagen.

The location will be announced later if the course can be held physically otherwise a link to Zoom will be sent a week before course start.

Participation both days and completion of a digital survey and homework assignment is required to receive credit.

Course certificates
Course certificates are issued after the workshop and the course evaluation and the homework assignment has been submitted. The certificates are sent to the participants by mail. You are required to forward to the PhD school at your faculty to receive credit. Some faculties/PhD schools require PhD students to use FrontPlanner when allocating ECTS credits, so make sure how it works at your faculty/PhD school.

Cancellation
Participation is free of charge but registration is binding. Cancellation must be received in writing and submitted to phdcourses@kb.dk no later than 7 days prior to course start.

Minimum attendance
15 (not including the presenters). Notification of cancellation will be emailed 7 days prior course start.
