Aim and content
This course is free of charge for PhD students at Danish universities (except Copenhagen Business School), and for PhD students at graduate schools in the other Nordic countries. All other participants must pay the course fee.

Anyone can apply for the course, but if you are not a PhD student at a Danish university, you will be placed on the waiting list until enrollment deadline. This also applies to PhD students from Nordic countries. After the enrollment deadline, available seats will be allocated to applicants on the waiting list.

Learning objectives
A student who has met the objectives of the course will be able to:

1. Understand and explain the physiological and pharmacological mechanisms of anaesthesia and analgesia

2. Have insight in the setup of an anaesthetic protocol and a pre- and post-operative welfare monitoring scheme

3. Compare different anaesthetic and analgesic treatment strategies and have insight in how to select relevant drugs for various experimental situations

4. Understand and demonstrate relevant methods and equipment for maintenance and monitoring of the anaesthesia appropriate to the species concerned

5. Understand and demonstrate relevant methods for post-operative pain assessment and management

Content
The course covers theoretical and pracitcal aspects of anaesthesia and analgesia in animal experimentation. It intends to give a thorough understanding of anaesthetic mechanisms, selection and combination of drugs and how to apply these in practice. It also aims at giving a thorough understanding of pain physiology, assessment and alleviation.

The course includes theoretical and practical approaches of induction of anaesthesia, endotracheal intubation, intravenous access and monitoring of anaesthesia, via lectures, demostrations and practical exercises on rats, mice and rabbits. In addition, case studies and group work will give the students the opportunity to discuss various experimental situations and how to best apply proper anaesthesia and analgesia in these.

The course adheres to the modules 20 and 21 in the European Commission Framework for Education and Training under the Directive 2010/63/EU, and thus covers the required content to cover the specific learning outcomes for these modules: http://ec.europa.eu/environment/chemicals/lab_animals/pdf/guidance/education_training/en.pdf

Participants
The course is aimed at PhD-students, other academics and technical staff who perform animal experimentation involving invasive procedures that require anaeshtesia. The participants shall have passed a course in laboratory animal science for at least functions A and D according to Directive 2010/63/EU, Article 23.2 (formerly FELASA C or B courses), or have similar qualifications.
