• Subject area:

Terrestrial ecology, ecosystem-atmosphere interactions, environmental biology.

• Scientific content:
The course focuses on the exchange of biogenic volatile organic compounds (BVOCs) between terrestrial ecosystems and the atmosphere across scales. The themes will include production/release (plant leaf-level), uptake/deposition (soil/plants), canopy-scale processes, and regional scale (ecosystem models). Focus is given to the interactions between BVOC exchange and other ecosystem processes, which will make the course relevant also for PhD students working with soil respiration/soil microbial communities, photosynthesis and plant physiology, ecosystem carbon exchange etc.

In addition to interactive lectures covering recent advances within the topic, the course will include demonstrations in laboratory focusing on the state-of-the-art methods in BVOC measurements and relevant data analyses. The participants will make projects in groups, discussing and identifying knowledge gaps as well as designing experiments. Each group will present their work at the end of the course.

Learning outcome
The course participants will be able to discuss BVOC exchange across the scales as well as contrast and compare the related processes to other ecosystem processes. The participants will be able to select suitable methods for laboratory or field studies on BVOC exchange including experimental design, sampling, chemical analysis and data analysis.
