Content
This course is integrated with lectures and journal clubs from the MSc course LBIK10135U Genome and Cell Biology.
The course focuses on eukaryotic cells and the following areas are covered: Transcription, translation and protein folding. Chromatin dynamics and epigenetics. Control of gene expression. Membrane structures, transport and electric properties. Intracellular compartments and protein sorting. Intracellular vesicular traffic. Cell communication. The cell cycle. Normal and abnormal development. Energy conversion and mitochondria. Cytoskeleton. Comparative cell biology

Learning outcome
The purpose of this course is to bring students to an advanced level in genome and cell biology. The course is very useful for PhD projects that relates to cell biology. This area of biology develops rapidly, and therefore, the focus is on obtaining an overview and on understanding principles of how cells function as we address the above list of topics at an advanced level. The lectures are based on the textbook, Molecular Biology of the Cell by Alberts et al. In addition, a number of high impact articles will be discussed in detail in small groups.

After the course the student should be able to:
Knowledge:
Describe chromatin dynamics, gene structural elements, gene regulation mechanisms and signaling of living cells.
Display overviews of membrane structures, cellular compartments and transport of molecules between compartments.
Describe cell division and cell cycle control.

Skills:
Analyse and evaluate scientific papers which describe cellular processes of any kind.
Apply knowledge on the molecular cell biology in the planning of own experiments.
Communicate the structure and molecular mechanisms of living cells.

Competences:
Apply knowledge on the structure of molecular mechanisms of cells to further analyse problems within genome and cell biology. The course level allows for an easy start on a PhD project with cell biology content.

Teaching and learning methods
Lectures.
Article work: Group of students discuss larger articles recently published in a high impact scientific journal with individual teacher. The articles have been selected by the teachers to complement the lectures to cover the cell biology area.

Workload
The course has a level that makes it highly recommended that the students have fundamental knowledge in cell biology, genetics, molecular biology and biochemistry. Students with little previous knowledge must be prepared for a challenging course.
The course is terminated by an oral exam.
