Aim and content
The purpose of this course is to provide PhD-students an understanding of social science qualitative methodology and knowledge about different kinds of qualitative methods. This course will facilitate methodological reflections on, and developments of, PhD students’ own research designs.

The course runs over two consecutive weeks.
The first week starts with a general introduction to qualitative methodology and research design. After the introduction, the week is built around ‘masterclasses’ in:
- Ethnographic fieldwork and observations
- Qualitative research interviews
- Focus groups
- Case studies

Experts within each of these methods will introduce the method and, taking departure in their own research, show how the method can be used with excellence and what kind of knowledge it can produce.

All masterclass lectures will be followed by a practical exercise, where the students get hands-on experience with the method, and a class discussion drawing on theoretical readings, the lecture and the exercise.

The second week is focused on the participants’ own research. The participants will introduce their PhD research and the ways in which they use/plan to use qualitative methods. Guided by peer feedback and a supervisor, each of the students will then work on their own project.

The project is independently tailored in accordance with the student’s PhD-research. It can, among other things, be to create a research design, construct fieldwork tools (interview guide, observation guide etc.), conduct a pilot study, try out different methods, or write a chapter about qualitative methods for their dissertation.

The second week ends with presentations of projects and a peer-feedback seminar, in which each student will receive feedback from the other students.

• The students can discuss qualitative methodology and its validity
• The students have knowledge about different fieldwork tools used in qualitative research

Skills:
• The students can operationalize a research interest/question
• The students can design their own qualitative study

Competences:
• The students can critically assess the quality of qualitative research designs
• The students can translate knowledge about qualitative methods to their own work

Teaching and learning methods
During first week of the course, the students will be introduced to different qualitative methods throughlecturers and “masterclass” guest-lecturers from experts in different kinds of qualitative methods.
The students will be asked to do exercises in groups and individually, giving them a hands-on experience with the different kinds of qualitative methods.
During the second week of the course, the students will focus on the qualitative methods relevant for their specific thesis work in a supervised, individual project work.
Furthermore, the students will learn through providing peer feedback during the course.

Type of assessment
Active participation throughout the course
Presentation of individual project work and participation in peer feedback-seminar

Lecturers
