Content
The course topics include: An introduction to problem solving in environmental analytical chemistry. Theory and practice for field sampling, safety for fieldwork in the Arctic, sample handling and sample preparation, analytical instrumentation and methods for field analysis, and scientific writing. The main focus will be on an setting up a sampling scheme for sediment, soil, air, water or biological matrices (e.g., mussels and fish bile), setting up a sample preparation and chemical analysis scheme that can work under field conditions, retrieval of metadata and contaminant data from the area or global data for GIS work, data analysis and scientific writing

Aim and content
The project work represent the heart of the course. Here, the participants train aspects of sampling, sample preparation, chemical analysis, quality assurance, data analysis and spatial modelling.
The project work include 1 week of field work in the Arctic including sampling, sample preparation and chemical analysis on-site as well as spatial modelling of contaminant distribution if relevant for the specific project. Projects are performed in groups of 3-4 students.

On the basis of your motivation letter and CV we will decide whether you will be called for an interview to be accepted on the course.

Learning outcome
The course objective is to design and execute a field study on contaminant distribution in an arctic field site (e.g., the Disko Island, Greenland) including sampling, chemical analysis, and spatial modelling if relevant for the specific project.

Remarks
MSc students will have to pay 6.000 DKK as a contribution to the travel expenses.
PhD students will have to pay 25.000 DKK to pay travel and lab expenses.

A course in instrumental analysis, like the course “Analytical Chemistry 1 LKEF10076”, is required and knowledge of, or a course in basic statistics, is also recommended. Knowledge on GIS technology and programming is an advantage.
