ENROLMENT
You apply for enrolment via the button in the top right corner AND by sending a motivational letter and your CV to Kasper Hornbæk (kash@di.ku.dk) no later than 1 December 2023.

The motivational letter should be about one page and touch upon questions:
(1) why do you want to participate in a course, and
(2) what is your favorite theory?

Aim and content
The course provides an introduction to current discussions about theory in human-computer interaction. It will cover both substantive issues about theories, such as activity theory and self-determination theory, and discussions about the possible and actual role of theory in HCI.

The course will consist of an introduction to the use and development of theory in HCI. This will be done both through lectures and through hands-on work with students' own theoretical ideas. Then, the course will discuss a few selected theories in depth, based on lectures by visiting professors. At the end of the course, students will discuss and practice the limitations of theoretical work in human-computer interaction. They will also relate what they have learned to their own dissertation projects and the theories used therein.

Learning outcome
Knowledge:
•Knowledge about taxonomies of theories in HCI and the functions of such theories in actual research.
•Insight into the most prominent theories in HCI, including activity theory and self-determination theory.

Skills:
•Ability to identify key components of theories as well as patterns of their application in own and published work.
•Assessing the theoretical adequacy of arguments in published papers.

Competences:
•Capability to apply ideas of theory in HCI to their own work in a way that advances that work.
•Discussion of theoretical issues in HCI, as they relate to prediction of phenomena, construction of interactive systems, and understanding mechanisms in interactive phenomena.

Literature
A reading list will be distributed three weeks before the course.

Target group
PhD students in human-computer interaction, psychology, computer science, media informatics, and similar.

Teaching and learning methods
The course will be lectures intertwined with exercises about theory.

Lecturers

Lecturer(s):
Prof. Kasper Hornbæk (DIKU)

Guest lectures:
Prof. Susanne Bødker (Aarhus University)
Prof. Christopher Frauenberger (Uni. Salzburg)
Prof. Eduardo Velloso (University of Melbourne)

Remarks

Final assignment
The course will be completed if PhD students participate in the course and hand in a paper three weeks after the course. The paper will cover a discussion of selected papers on theory in HCI as well as an analysis and reflection on the students’ own projects, vis a vis the readings and discussions at the course.

Recommended academic qualifications
A relevant master degree and enrollment in a PhD course.
