Aim and content

The overall aim of the course element “Introduction to being a PhD at SCIENCE and the PhD project plan” is to provide the PhD students with a comprehensive overview of the PhD project and PhD education that lies ahead of them, and support that they take ownership of their own project and learning process, through being able to describe their project plan and communicate it to peers in writing and orally. Moreover, the course aims to stimulate an appreciative feedback culture, strengthening PhD students’ abilities to give and receive feedback in a multidisciplinary and diverse course community.

The overall aim of RCR1 element is to prepare PhD students engage in reflections and discussions about good scientific practice. RCR1 covers the following topics:
• General introduction to good scientific practice, questionable research practice (QRP) and research misconduct.
• Causes of misconduct and QRPs, and the national and institutional efforts to prevent and investigate misconducts and QRP
• In depth discussion of selected RCR issues, including plagiarism, authorship, ethical approvals, p-hacking, and conflicts of interests.
General introduction to the principles of open science.

The overall aim of the career management element of the module is to ensure that PhD students take the time to think about their career decisions and increase their understanding of how their academic learning and career development are intertwined.

The career management element of this module will cover the following topics:
• Understanding career and career management
• Early career expectations and motivation to pursue a PhD
• Career decision-making

Learning outcome
The learning outcomes for the elements of the module are given below. Each outcome is marked K for Knowledge, S for Skills, or C for Competences.

PhD project plan element:
• Knowledge about project planning and how a project description for a research project (e.g. for a grant application) is described) (K).
• Ability to plan and describe a large scientific project to peers (S)
• Competence to take charge of own research project and learning process (C)

Responsible Conduct of Research 1 (RCR1) element
• Knowledge of central RCR concepts (K)
• Knowledge of procedures at different levels for preventing and investigating deviations from good scientific practice (K).
• Ability to identify and analyze potential RCR issues in concrete research projects (S).
• Engage in informed discussions with colleagues about RCR in relation to specific research projects (C)


The career management element:
• Describe the concept of career and career management (K).
• Analyse, discuss and critically reflect on their own career decision-making and motivation to pursue a PhD (C).
• Reflect on their own career management skills (C).

Target group
Module 1 lies within the first 3 months of the PhD programme.

The modul is for PhD students enrolled after 1/1 2024.

PhD students enrolled before 1/1 2024 and External PhD students do not participate in Fundamentals.

Lecturers
The course element “Introduction to being a PhD at SCIENCE and the PhD project plan” is taught by the head of the PhD school at SCIENCE, a teacher team with departmental Deputy Heads for Research (VILF-representatives) and departmental PhD-coordinators from SCIENCE along with staff from the PhD Team at the faculty administration. This part of the program corresponds to 55% of the module.

The Responsible Conduct of Research 1 (RCR1) element of this module is provided by IFRO. RCR1 covers 1 ECTS, equivalent to 40%.

The career management element of this module is provided by SCIENCE Education. SCIENCE Education delivers 5% of the module.

By building a Faculty-wide peer community of PhD-students with the Fundamentals course, we secure that all PhD candidates are given adequate instruction in a range of essential competences that lie outside the core scientific research skills offered through supervision, tool-box and specialized PhD courses. Moreover, we build bridges between different research programmes at the Faculty of SCIENCE and offer diverse, multidisciplinary fora of exchange strengthening the PhD candidates’ scientific and social networks and laying the foundation for a strong alumni culture
