Aim and content
The purpose of this Science Communication Toolbox course is to provide the PhD students with basic science dissemination skills within written and spoken science communication used in monologue, dialogue, and co-creation. The course also teaches the students about the different contexts of science communication in order for the course to provide the proper skillset for the PhD students whether they stay in academia or join a public or private organization later in their career. Finally, the PhD students will be equipped with tools on how to reflect on own and others’ communication practices.

The course is based on active learning strategies, why the students will both build and reflect on their own science communication practice during the course.

The first part of the course starts at 09.00 on a Monday and lasts until 16.00 on Wednesday afternoon. The second part takes place 3-4 weeks later, starting a Wednesday morning 09.00 and lasts until 16.00 on Thursday afternoon. In between part one and two, the participants have an assignment to do.

Learning outcome
Knowledge
• The PhD Students will be able to account for key theories and practices of science communication, including models of communication, scientific knowledge, audience reception, and analytical frames.

Skills
• The PhD Students will be able to create science communication products which utilize specific formats to communicate scientific knowledge to defined audiences.

Competencies
• The PhD Students will be able to critically examine instances of science communication by drawing on appropriate theories and methods in the field.
• The PhD Students will be able to communicate such assessment and analysis with precision.

Target group
The module is planned to allow for the diverse group of PhD students interested in communicating their research to private industries, policy makers, and public audiences.

The module is planned to allow for the diverse group of PhD students, but we will primarily teach science communication as performed in a Danish context.

The course ideally has 25+ participants and is repeated two times a year.

The course will primarily be filled with participants from SCIENCE and HEALTH, but will welcome PhD fellows from other faculties and Universities.

Teaching and learning methods
The course includes individual study as well as reflective and practical assignments, partly based on field work/own experiences.

The lectures and course instructions are based on active learning methodologies, demonstrating the same tools that the participants are there to learn and later deploy in their own science communication practice.

The PhD students must be in attendance all five course days, and they must each create and test a science communication product between part one and two of their course + provide feedback for their classmates.

Lecturers
1-2 persons with relevant experience will guest the course.
