Enrolment guidelines
This is a specialised course where 50% of the seats are reserved for PhD students enrolled at the Faculty of SCIENCE at UCPH and 50% of the seats are reserved for PhD students at other faculties and universities. Seats will be allocated on a first-come, first-served basis and according to the applicable rules.

Anyone can apply for the course, but if you are not a PhD student, you will only be given a seat on the course if there are available seats left.


Aim and Content
The course focuses on the exchange of biogenic volatiles, such as volatile organic compounds (VOCs), between ecosystems and the atmosphere across scales. The themes will include production and consumption of volatiles in microbial communities in soil and water as well as VOC-exchange in plants and whole ecosystems.
Focus is given to the interactions between the volatile production/consumption processes and other ecosystem processes, which will make the course relevant also for PhD students working with microbial ecology, plant ecophysiology, ecosystem carbon exchange etc. In addition to interactive lectures covering recent advances within the topic, the course will include demonstrations of state-of-the-art methodology in VOC measurements, and relevant multivariate statistical analyses.
The participants are expected to read provided materials prior to the course and prepare a pre-course assignment (elevator pitch on their research).
During the course, the participants work in groups, mentored by the course lecturers to develop a study design, which they present during the course.


Learning outcomes
Intended learning outcome for the students who complete the course:

Knowledge:
• Volatile production by microbial communities, plants and whole ecosystems
• Volatile consumption by microbial communities in different environments

Skills:
• Discuss the volatile production/consumption processes in the context of net volatile emissions from ecosystems
• Relate the volatile production/consumption processes to other ecosystem processes
• Critically select and apply suitable methods for laboratory and field studies within the subject area, including chemical analysis and data analysis

Competences:
• Develop own research considering the recent advances within the field


Target Group
PhD students in the fields of biology, plant and environmental sciences, metabolomics. Also atmospheric chemistry PhD students may find the course relevant.

Teaching and Learning Methods
Lectures, demonstrations, group work.
The participants are expected to read provided materials prior to the course and prepare a pre-course assignment. During the course, participants work in groups developing a study design, which they present during the course.


Type of Assessment
Active participation, including handing in the pre- and post-course assignments is a requirement for successful completion of the course.

About one week after registration deadline, all applicants on the waiting list will be notified whether they are given a seat.

Cancellation policy
•Cancellations made up to two weeks before the course starts are free of charge.
•Cancellations made less than two weeks before the course starts will be charged a fee of DKK 3.000
•Participants with less than 80% attendance cannot pass the course and will be charged a fee of DKK 5.000
•No-show will result in a fee of DKK 5.000
•Participants who fail to hand in any mandatory exams or assignments cannot pass the course and will be charged a fee of DKK 5.000
