Aim and content
Course title
Scientific article writing and critical literature scrutiny

Learning objectives
The course objectives are to equip participants with tools and skills to critically read and assess scientific papers with a special view to pharmaceutical sciences and medicine. The course will also train participants in drafting a scientific article in these fields.

A student who has met the objectives of the course will:

a. be able to assess scientific papers within pharmaceutical sciences and medicine
b. get skills in drafting scientific manuscripts and to review scientific articles within pharmaceutical sciences and medicines
c. get knowledge about databases, levels of evidence, how to write articles and thesis on a variety of medicines related topics and how to submit an article

Content
The course presents a variety of topical issues with respect to article reading and writing. The course content includes topics such as

• How to write a paper
• Evidence-based medicine, levels of evidence
• The Cochrane Library, critical reviews, meta-analyses, and the QUOROM statement
• Reporting of randomised clinical trials, incl. the CONSORT statement
• Reporting of studies within pharmaceutical sciences
• Scientific reporting of pharmacoepidemiology
• Reporting of qualitative studies
• Databases and journal indexing (Impact Factors ect)
• The Editor’s requirements, guidance to authors and guidance to reviewers
• Guidance for authorship and contributorship and good scientific practice
• Training in writing a paper
• Training in critical article scrutiny

The topics are illustrated by papers published in journals with various scopes and publishing styles.
The course is based on the active involvement of participants and encompasses several individual and group tasks. Two specific tasks will be presentation of an article and writing a draft paper (with introduction, methods section, outline of results section, points for discussion and conclusion). Preparation for the course includes critical reading of selected book chapters, articles and writing a one to two page outline of a manuscript. A selection of relevant journals will be displayed during the course.


Participants
PhD students and other postgraduate students. The course is also open for other postgraduates with a suitable background.

Please note that all courses have to be provided in English if required by non-Danish participants.

Form
Lectures, group work, exercises (drafting manuscripts), discussion (literature scrutiny), presentations.

Evaluation
Based on the participant’s performance with special view to the two individual assignments, a pass/fail is given by the course directors.
