Aim and content
Learning objectives

A student who has met the objectives of the course:

a. Have a broad knowledge of the various phases involved in development of new drugs
b. Have an insight in and an understanding of the dynamic and interdisciplinary nature of the drug development process
c. Have the ability to understand and communicate with other experts across the different fields of the drug development process

Content
The various disciplines and elements which are involved in the process of drug discovery and development, from validation of a drug target to the identification of a lead structure leading to development and use of a drug will be covered:.

- Target identification, evaluation and identification of lead structures
- Medicinal Chemistry: Lead optimisation and synthesis
- Pharmacology and non-clinical safety
- Pre-formulation
- Pharmaceutical formulation, production and quality systems
- Clinical trials
- Regulatory affairs and patents

Participants
The target group will be PhD students with a non-pharmaceutical background.

Language
English

Form
The individual topics will be covered by lectures and case stories given by experts from industry and will form the basis for the participants to work on a project in groups of three to four.
The project work will be based on a registered drug substance; each group will work
with a different drug substance; the substances selected will vary from year to year;
the selection criteria is based on the wish to provide the participants with a broad
knowledge of different drug types (small molecules, peptides and biologics), different administration routes (oral, parenteral, nasal etc.) and different targets (local and systemic) as well as different therapeutics groups (CNS, cardiovascular etc.) and different patient groups (elderly, children). The project work will be guided by both external teachers from industry and PHARMA-based scientists representing the different topics.
