Aim and content
Please note: This is a generic course. This means that the course is reserved for PhD students at the Graduate School of Health and Medical Sciences at UCPH. Anyone can apply for the course, but if you are not a PhD student at the Graduate School, you will be placed on waiting list for the course until enrollment deadline. After the deadline, available seats will be allocated to students on the waiting list.

COURSE DESCRIPTION
Qualitative inquiry is an important part of health research in order to understand and help patients and their families through the illness trajectory. Qualitative methodology compliments quantitative studies and is an integral part of mixed-methods research. The aim of this course is to provide an introduction to commonly used qualitative approaches in health sciences research and to discuss the application and applicability of each approach.

Introduction to Qualitative Methods in Health Sciences

Learning objectives
A student who has met the objectives of the course will be able to:

a. Describe and compare different types of qualitative approaches
b. Discuss the usefulness of each approach in relation to the research question
c. Use an appropriate design in own study
d. Plan the use of various research methodologies in own research

Content
The course includes an introduction to qualitative inquiry using various approaches (hermeneutics, phenomenology, grounded theory, narratives, ethnography and content analysis) and methods (interviews, participant observation and field work).

Participants
Participants are PhD students and other postgraduate researchers conducting qualitative studies.

Danish or English

Form
Each approach is presented in lectures and discussed with the participants during workshops where participants present their studies. Questions related to each approach are answered during group discussions.
