Aim and content
Learning objectives
A student who has met the objectives of the course will be able to:
a. describe and understand theories, which are dominant within the field of migration, ethnicity and health including causal pathways associating migration and ethnic background with health outcomes and health care access;
b. explain and apply the main methodological approaches and data sources within the field of migrant health;
c. assess and discuss the existing evidence within the field of migrant health and appraise and develop the relevant quantitative and qualitative methodologies in own projects.
Content
The aim of this PhD course is to provide participants with an interest in migration, ethnicity and health a general introduction to theories and methods within the research field. The concepts of migration and ethnicity and their interrelationship are defined; as well as the complex causal mechanisms behind the effect of migration and ethnicity on health and access to health care. Moreover, methodological challenges including categorisation of ethnicity and the pros and cons of different study designs are addressed.
Participants
The target group includes international and Danish PhD students working within the field of Migration and Health. The course can accept 12-20 PhD students.
