Aim and content
Students will be introduced to the fundamental concepts and merits of multidimensional separation techniques encompassing GC, LC, and SFC. Following hand on laboratory sessions, analyzing samples using pulsed-elution and comprehensive LC×LC plus comprehensive GC×GC, students will gain practical experience in the most common data analysis ad chemometric strategies in two-dimensional chromatography.
The course objectives are to illustrate the advantages and necessity of using comprehensive two-dimensional chromatographic techniques in the analysis of complex samples.
Lectures will be given on the history and methodology of comprehensive multi-dimensional separations using gas (GC), liquid (LC), and supercritical fluid chromatography (SFC). Applications, method development and data analysis will be covered in detail, followed by practical lab-work where students will gain hands-on experience in both commercial and in-house data analysis software, gaining insights into their previously acquired data.

Formel requirements
The participants of the course are required to have a background in chromatography with a theoretical and practical understanding of one dimensional techniques.

Learning outcome
Knowledge:
•Understand the history, operating principles and applications of multidimensional separations encompassing GC, LC, and SFC
•Understand theoretical principles of multidimensional chromatography.

Skills:
•Carry out method development in LC×LC and thermally modulated GC×GC.
•Analyze samples using pulsed elution and comprehensive LC×LC-MS and thermally modulated GC×GC-MS

Competences:
•Make meaningful conclusions from the multidimensional data acquired using both commercial and in-house data analysis software.
•Be able to evaluate a separation problem and have the knowledge to select a multidimensional techniques suitable for solving the problem at hand.

Target group
The target group is PhD students from primarily Danish universities with the possibility also for international PhD students to join. The students are expected to have a background within analytical chemistry and motivated to learn about multidimensional techniques to solve challenges with identifying compounds in their own research.
The course aims to attract students from different scientific fields: environmental, biological and pharmaceutical research. In this way, we encourage networking and forming of a multidimensional community in Denmark with international links.

Teaching and learning methods
The course will be a mixture of lectures, laboratory exercises as well as theoretical and practical data processing exercises.
