Enrolment guidelines This is a toolbox course where 80% of the seats are reserved for PhD students enrolled at the Faculty of SCIENCE at UCPH and 20% of the seats are reserved for PhD students from other Danish Universities/faculties (except CBS). Seats will be allocated on a first-come, first-served basis and according to the applicable rules. Anyone can apply for the course, but if you are not a PhD student at a Danish university (except CBS), you will be placed on the waiting list until enrollment deadline. After the enrollment deadline, available seats will be allocated to applicants on the waiting list. Aim and Content This course introduces you to basic concepts and tools to be used in project management. The knowledge and skills you will gain are generic and transferable across organizations and different kinds of projects. Most important is of course your own phd project. A very concrete outcome of the course is that you will be able to formulate and establish a detailed and operational project plan for your phd. A traditonal phd plan might not be particulary operational for the phd student and most offen not detailed enough for you to be able to be in control. Aiming at how to manage a project the course will take you through the different phases in a project: 1) initiating/defining 2) planning 3) executing 4) closing. The focus in the course will be on the planning phase and you will be presented with tools useful in steering deliverables, cost, time, risk management and stakeholder management. The planning phase is crucial for steering the execution of a project but so is the ability to lead a project team. Therefore, the course will touch on how to lead a team and on team dynamics. The course provides a basic understanding of the different parts of project management to develop the skills of the PhD students contributing to a future job. But the knowledge and skills the course provides are not only for future use. PhD-students can apply project management tools to their own PhD-project. The course will be a mix of lectures, exercises and teamwork. There will be examples from how companies work with projects and the course will be conducted in corporation with professional project managers from private companies. Learning outcomes Intended learning outcome for the students who complete the course: On completion of the course the participant is expected to have gained a practical foundation for planning, controlling and conducting projects. Knowledge: • The concepts of projects, different phases and the project life cycle • Team dynamics • Project Leadership Skills: • Being able to initiate and defining a project • Being able to plan for milestones and deliverables • Being able to create schedule for costs, time and resources • Being able to carry out both risk and stakeholder analysis • Effective communication and cooperation in teamwork • Negotiation with stakeholders • Leading a team Competences: • Being in control in own PhD project • Steering and leading projects in professional settings after graduation Target Group The course is aimed at Ph.D. students at any stage of their project. Recommended Academic Qualifications The are no specific academic qualifications recommended Research Area The course applies to all research areas Teaching and Learning Methods The activities on the course will be a mix of lectures, instructions, exercises and teamwork. Type of Assessment A week after the last course day each course participant must submit a reflection essay that needs to be approved Literature A compilation of lecture slides and lecture notes will be available throughout the course, together with a list of suggested readings. In addition to the course fee, there might also be a participant fee. If the course has a participant fee, this will apply to all participants regardless of participant type - and in addition to the course fee.
