Aim and content
This course is free of charge for PhD students at Danish universities (except Copenhagen Business School). Special rules apply for research year students enrolled at Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences at UCPH. All other participants must pay the course fee.
Anyone can apply for the course, but if you are not a PhD student, you will be placed on the waiting list for the course until enrollment deadline. After the deadline of enrollment, available seats will be allocated to students on the waiting list.

Course title
Lipids and Membranes in Disease

Learning objectives
A student who has met the objectives of the course will be able to:

1. Have an overview on structural, biochemical, and biophysical features of membrane lipids.
2. Describe features of metabolism and functioning of membrane lipids and their dysregulation in examples of human diseases.
3. Have a foundation to critically read and understand research articles involving lipids.
4. Have understanding in current methodology for monitoring lipids.
5. Describe emerging themes and future perspectives in researches in diseases involving dysregulated lipid metabolism.

Content
Lipids are major constituents of cellular membranes, where biomolecules dynamically assemble to orchestrate a variety of biological processes including signaling and trafficking. Lipids play key roles in the coordination of those processes through interactions with each other and with proteins, and dysregulation in lipid metabolism is linked to many human diseases. This course aims at providing an overview on the structures, functions, and physiological roles of diverse lipids, their involvement in human diseases, and state-of-the-art lipidomics and other techniques currently available for monitoring the metabolism and functioning of lipids in cell.

Participants
Ph. D. –level students with a B.Sc. and/or M.Sc. degree in any biological science or chemistry are eligible to apply. The course is limited to 15 participants.
