Practical Supervision: Teaching & Collaboration in laboratories – for PhD’s WITH teaching experience

Learning objectives
A student who has met the objectives of the course will be able to:

1. Have a basic understanding of the frame, purpose, objectives, structure and tasks concerning the practical supervision of master/bachelor students in lab
2. Be able to initiate new supervisory programs in the best way
3. Strengthen his/hers preconditions as teachers and ‘boss’
Content
Many PhD students are supervising bachelor/master students in the laboratory on a regular basis.
As Practical Supervisor you will have hands-on responsibilities for the new project and for the learning process that takes place for the student. This course aims at preparing you for this task: providing you with general knowledge about the process, matching of expectations, learning mechanisms, and learning resistance.

Among the important tasks for Practical Supervisor are, to make sure that the quality of the daily scientific work done by the student is good and that the project is well coordinated and facilitated. Therefore, it becomes important for you to know about constructive feedback, communication, and motivation. Furthermore, the coordination is not just between you and the student but involves also the Main Supervisor, so it is important to understand and define the roles and responsibilities of the participants.

This course aims at developing skills that will not only ease your job as Practical Supervisor. The new skills will also strengthen your future work, because you obtain knowledge about, and experiences with, facilitating learning processes and make things work between people.

Participants
The course is targeted at PhD students in their final part of studies, eg after 2 years.

Relevance to graduate programmes

Clinical Cancer Research

Language

Form
The course is based on theory but focus primarily on practice. The participants will:
• Be presented to relevant dilemmas
• Discuss essential questions within the course topics
• Test relevant exercises/tools
• Engage in a Peer Supervision group (a method of supporting each other in the process of developing your Practical Supervision skills)
• Formulate 2-3 focus point on their own practical supervision, which they are going to train.

Participants must expect to be involved during the course. The course just doesn’t talk about expectation, learning, motivation, communication and feedback. It emphasizes practicing all those elements. The purpose is to give participants actual experiences.

After the first two course days, participants are asked to practice their Practical Supervision skills with particular attention to the formulated focus points. After three months we meet again for a short follow up. This time the purpose is to discuss and exchange experiences with Practical Supervision and Peer Supervision.
