Aim and content This course is free of charge for PhD students at Danish universities (except Copenhagen Business School). Special rules apply for research year students enrolled at Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences at UCPH. All other participants must pay the course fee. Anyone can apply for the course, but if you are not a PhD student, you will be placed on the waiting list for the course until enrollment deadline. After the deadline of enrollment, available seats will be allocated to students on the waiting list. Learning objectives A student who has met the objectives of the course will be able to: 1. Understand the principles of general disease processes including using the terminology of lesion. 2. Define lesions and group lesions with reference to the general classification of lesions: cellular pathology, pathology of blood flow and circulation, inflammation and repair, immunopathology and disorders of growth. 3. Describe pathological changes and explain fundamental pathogenetic mechanisms leading to the changes. 4. Understand the process for tissue slide production and staining. Understand the application of molecular techniques for visualization of specific markers on tissue slides. 5. Distinguish between normal and pathological cells, tissues and organs, both microscopically and macroscopically. Diagnose lesions observed in pathological cells, tissues and organs. 6. Explain the apparent pathogenesis/mechanisms causing lesions in cells, tissues and organs. 7. Describe lesions in cells, tissues and organs with the correct terminology. 8. Discuss the etiology and pathogenesis of lesions and evaluate and discuss histopathological diagnoses. 9. Discuss the pros and cons of the use of laboratory animals in biomedical research. 10. Discuss lesions in laboratory animals in general. 11. Discuss toxic lesions in laboratory animals. 12. Discuss models of lifestyle-related diseases, neurological diseases and cancer in laboratory animals. 13. Discuss the pathology in porcine models of infectious lesions. Content Introduction to pathology and pathological techniques, including demonstration of necropsy findings, conventional histochemistry, immunohistochemistry, and in situ-hybridization. General pathology with focus on the morphological changes in relation to cytopathology, pathology of blood flow and circulation, immunopathology, infection, inflammation and repair, and disorders of cell growth. Introduction to histopathology, gross pathology and in situ visualization techniques. Introduction to laboratory animal pathology and selected areas in which animal models are used in biomedical research. Participants PhD-students with a background in life sciences/biology without knowledge of pathology but with basic knowledge of cell structure and function.
