Aim and content This course is free of charge for PhD students at Danish universities (except Copenhagen Business School). Special rules apply for research year students enrolled at Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences at UCPH. All other participants must pay the course fee. Anyone can apply for the course, but if you are not a PhD student, you will be placed on the waiting list for the course until enrollment deadline. After the deadline of enrollment, available seats will be allocated to students on the waiting list. Learning objectives A student who has met the objectives of the course will be able to: 1. Independently perform a lege artis semi-structurered PANSS interview 2. Independently and reliably rate a PANSS interview 3. Translate PANSS scores into useful clinical information and interpret PANSS score in a research context Content The aim of this course is to teach the participants to use the Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS) PANSS is a 30-item psychometric scale used to measure and monitor symptom severity in psychotic patients. The instrument was developed by Stanley Kay, Lewis Opler and Abraham Fiszbein in 1987. The PANSS is a relatively brief, semistructured interview, requiring 30-45 minutes to administer. During the course the participants will be theoretically introduced to the PANSS. Moreover, all participants are required to conduct interviews with patients. All interviews are subsequently rated. For approval of the course, a short written clinical summary of each PANSS interview is required. 1 Participants PhD students in psychiatry and clinicans can participate. Before the course the PANSS manual should be studied closely (will be sent out prior to the course). Relevance to graduate programmes The course is relevant to PhD students from the following graduate programmes at the Graduate School of Health and Medical Sciences, UCPH: Psychiatry Neuroscience Clinical Research Language Danish English or Danish. Note that all courses have to be provided in English if required by non-Danish participants. Form Lectures, DVDs and interviews with patients.
