Aim and content
This course is free of charge for PhD students at Danish universities (except Copenhagen Business School). All other participants must pay the course fee.
Anyone can apply for the course, but if you are not a PhD student, you will be placed on the waiting list for the course until enrollment deadline. After the deadline of enrollment, available seats will be allocated to students on the waiting list.
Learning objectives
A student who has met the objectives of the course will be able to:
1. Understand the concept of mitochondrial bioenergetics
2. Define mitochondrial function and dysfunction
3. Design experiments measuring reactive oxygen species (ROS) production. Interpretation of ROS experiments.
4. Monitor plasma and mitochondrial potentials in intact cells
5. Understand The Seahorse respirometer
Content
The content of the course will be on mitochondrial bioenergetics (respiration, reactive oxygen species production and membrane potential), providing the students with a deeper understanding of bioenergetics, and how to measure it. The course will provide the students with the ability to design experiments investigating mitochondrial bioenergetics.
Literature for the course will be the book: “Bioenergetics 4” by David G. Nicholls & Stuart J. Ferguson and other relevant papers.
Participants
Students with interest in mitochondrial bioenergetics will benefit from the course. There are no required qualifications, but it is an advantage if the students have work in the field of mitochondrial physiology.
Relevance to graduate programmes
The course is relevant to PhD students from the following graduate programmes at the Graduate School of Health and Medical Sciences, UCPH:
Basic and Clinical Research in Musculoskeletal and Oral Sciences
All graduate programmes
Language
English
Form
Lectures, group work, discussions
Before the course the participants will receive a reading list, so that they can prepare for the lectures.
