Learning objectives
A student who has met the objectives of the course will be able to:

1. Have a basic understanding of the frame, purpose, objectives, structure and tasks concerning the practical supervision of master/bachelor students in lab
2. Be able to initiate new supervisory programs in the best way
3. Strengthen his/hers preconditions as teachers and ‘boss’
Content
Many PhD students are supervising bachelor/master students in the laboratory on a regular basis.
As Practical Supervisor you will have hands-on responsibilities for the new project and for the learning process that takes place for the student. This course aims at preparing you for this task: providing you with general knowledge about the process, matching of expectations, learning mechanisms, and learning resistance.

Among the important tasks for Practical Supervisor are, to make sure that the quality of the daily scientific work done by the student is good and that the project is well coordinated and facilitated. Therefore, it becomes important for you to know about constructive feedback, communication, and motivation. Furthermore, the coordination is not just between you and the student but involves also the Main Supervisor, so it is important to understand and define the roles and responsibilities of the participants.

This course aims at developing skills that will not only ease your job as Practical Supervisor. The new skills will also strengthen your future work, because you obtain knowledge about, and experiences with, facilitating learning processes and make things work between people.

Participants
The course is targeted at PhD students in their final part of studies, eg after 2 years.

Relevance to graduate programs

Language

Form
The course is based on theory but focus primarily on practice. The participants will:
• Focus on relevant dilemmas
• Discuss essential questions within the course topics
• Test relevant tools
• Engage in a Peer Supervision group
For students with teaching experience:
• Focus on how they give supervision to their student
• Focus on a relevant problem concerning their practice as a practical supervisor, which they are going to try and do something about.
For students without teaching experience:
• Focus on how they receive supervision from their head supervisor
• Focus on a relevant problem concerning their own practical supervision, which they are going to try and do something about.

Participants must expect to be involved during the course. The course just doesn’t talk about expectation, learning, motivation, communication and feedback. It emphasizes practicing all those elements. The purpose is to give participants actual experiences.

After the first two course days, participants are expected to try out some of the ideas they have got from the course and some of the tools, they have heard about on the course. They are asked to choose one or more tools that they think might be helpful considering the problem, they wishes to focus on. They apply the tool(s). They share their wonder, questions and experiences with their Peer Support Group.
The Peer Support Group is an important part of this course. In this group participants are going to give and receive Peer Support during the period. Since participants will gather in groups of 3, they are going to meet in the group three times at all. Approximately one hour each time.
