Aim and content
This course is free of charge for PhD students at Danish universities (except Copenhagen Business School). All other participants must pay the course fee.
Anyone can apply for the course, but if you are not a PhD student, you will be placed on the waiting list for the course until enrollment deadline. After the deadline of enrollment, available seats will be allocated to students on the waiting list.
Learning objectives
A student who has met the objectives of the course will be able to:
Describe the indicators and measures used in infectious disease epidemiology - Identify the main stakeholders in the field of infectious disease epidemiology - Distinguish between different kinds of surveillance systems - Understand the possibilities and limitations of surveillance data - Identify and apply the steps of an outbreak investigation - Describe different study designs for outbreak investigations - Generate and communicate public health recommendations in relation to outbreaks - Understand the importance of microbiology in surveillance and control of infectious diseases
Content Vaccines and antibiotics have played an important role in the fight against communicable diseases. However, worldwide inequalities in accessing health care including treatments and vaccines, re-emergence of vaccine preventable diseases, and the threat of antimicrobial resistance as well as the risk of emerging new pathogens underline the fact that communicable diseases remain a global public health challenge.
This course gives an introduction to the application of epidemiology to the field of infectious diseases. You will learn more about:
- The current global challenges as to communicable diseases and what can be done to respond to them.
- What makes a good surveillance system and how can its data be used as information for taking action.
- How outbreaks of communicable disease are discovered, handled and learned from – on a global and on a local basis.
Participants The course is aimed at PhD students in public health, medicine and/or epidemiology. There will be a maximum of 25 students. Participants are expected to have basic epidemiological skills.
Language English
Form The course will include a combination of lectures and group work based on real life case studies.
