Aim and content

Please read under "Participants". All applicants will be put on the waiting list until enrollment deadline.

The course is free of charge for PhD students at Danish universities (except Copenhagen Business School). All other participants must pay the course fee.

Course title
Scientific Project Planning and Management 2: Project and Career planning.

Learning objectives
A student who has met the objectives of the course will be able to:

1. Familiarise him/herself with the most important tools for finishing the PhD
2. Get an insight into important tools for planning his/her future career

Content
1) Teach you how to focus on important tasks and thus finish your PhD successfully.
2) Show you an easy and fun method for career planning (Business Modell You ®) and to teach you how to apply this method for your next career step.

In short teaching sessions and very interactive exercises you will evaluate useful project management tools and apply them to the last phase of your PhD. The emphasis will be on keeping motivation up and procrastination down.

Since there is a life after your PhD, the second half of the workshop will deal with your career perspectives and wishes. In group sessions you will assess your skills, strengths, interests and pain points.

With the Business Modell You Canvas method you can then model your current and next career situation, understand the thinking of potential employers and match both using extensive feedback of your peers.

Thus equipped you will be clearer about your final tasks in your PhD project and you can easily plan the next move in direction of a career which is meaningful and attractive to you.

The main topic areas covered are:

Day 1 – Tools for finishing the PhD
Planning the final stages of your PhD
Work-life balance (Dealing with/avoiding stress)
Handling conflicts
Keeping collaborations running after you leave the bench/lab
Practical planning before handing in your thesis; rules, regulations and responsibilities
How to coordinate the writing process in collaboration with your supervisor
How to write your thesis in practice – ideas and tips

Day 2 – Tools for planning your future career
Strategic career planning and personal strategies: Tools that help you look beyond a one-year horizon
Making career choices (industry vs academia – who can help you weigh-up your options?)
Networking and self-marketing
Fundraising
Job seeking in academia, hospital, and industry – which skills are needed?
Personality tests in industry

Participants
PCAP PhD students who are around 2-2.5 years in their PhD project will have first priority on this course. This means that all applicants will be put on the waiting list upon registration, and after deadline all participants will be notified.
