Aim and content
This is a generic course. This means that the course is reserved for PhD students at the Graduate School of Health and Medical Sciences at UCPH. Anyone can apply for the course, but if you are not a PhD student at the Graduate School, you will be placed on the waiting list until enrollment deadline. After the enrolment deadline, available seats will be allocated to the waiting list.
The course is free of charge for PhD students at Danish universities (except Copenhagen Business School). All other participants must pay the course
Learning objectives
A student who has met the objectives of the course will be able to:
1. master cognitive processes and emotional reactions during scientific presentation
2. improve impact of presence during presentation
3. better handle stress in connection to presentation
4. learn to meet critisism with understanding and respect without fear
5. become a better communicator
The mission with this 2-day course is to help ph.d.-students to perform better during oral presentation. Data from many universities have shown that ph.d.-students often fear the oral presentation and thus spend too much time on worrying. By teaching (in theory and practice), the students will acknowledge and recognize the cognitive processes involved in such thinking, the students will then be able to better appreciate “nerves” and use the physiological arousal in a constructive and outward manner – and thus the get the message across. A sidegoal will be a better ph.d.-time with less worrying.
Participants will learn to understand why and when the brain turns to “a negative mode” - and how to turn it to a positive and enjoyable state.
Participants will be able to identify the arousal – and put it to work in a constructive manner.
Participants will obtain tools for themselves, and also tools for helping other students.
Participants will realize that “nerves” are their greatest tool if used correctly.
