Aim and content This is a generic course. This means that the course is reserved for PhD students at the Graduate School of Health and Medical Sciences at UCPH. Anyone can apply for the course, but if you are not a PhD student at the Graduate School, you will be placed on the waiting list until enrollment deadline. After the enrolment deadline, available seats will be allocated to the waiting list. The course is free of charge for PhD students at Danish universities (except Copenhagen Business School). All other participants must pay the course fee. Course title Intensive Medical Writing: Learn how to write papers that get published Learning objectives A student who has met the objectives of the course will be able to: 1. Write a well-structured manuscript and a convincing cover letter 2. Identify the most common errors of grammar and usage 3. Present numbers correctly 4. Appreciate the importance of effective figures and tables 5. Understand medical writing conventions and the editorial process Content This course is in two parts. Part I is a half-day session for all participants. The emphasis here is on how to avoid the most common errors of grammar and usage when writing papers in English, how to prepare effective illustrations, and how to understand the publication process. The participants then split into two groups and attend either the Tuesday and Wednesday or the Thursday and Friday full-day sessions. Part II focuses on writing clearly, correctly, concisely and memorably for an international audience, style and vocabulary, punctuation, presentation of numbers, and the cover letter. Participants PhD students, and, if there are any vacant places, other researchers, who are writing for publication in life-science journals. NOTE: All participants must bring eight copies of a 1- to 3-page text they have written in English. This should not have been professionally edited.
