Aim and content This is a generic course. This means that the course is reserved for PhD students at the Graduate School of Health and Medical Sciences at UCPH. Anyone can apply for the course, but if you are not a PhD student at the Graduate School, you will be placed on the waiting list until enrollment deadline. After the enrolment deadline, available seats will be allocated to the waiting list. The course is free of charge for PhD students at Danish universities (except Copenhagen Business School). All other participants must pay the course Course title Practical Supervision: Teaching & Collaboration in laboratories Learning objectives A student who has met the objectives of the course will be able to: 1. Have a basic understanding of the frame, purpose, objectives, structure and tasks concerning the practical supervision of master/bachelor students in lab 2. Be able to initiate new supervisory programs in the best way 3. Strengthen his/hers preconditions as teachers Content Many PhD students are going to supervise bachelor/master students in the laboratory on a regular basis. As Practical Supervisor you will have hands-on responsibilities for the new project and for the learning process that takes place for the student. This course aims at preparing you for this task: providing you with general knowledge about the process, matching of expectations, learning mechanisms, and learning resistance. Among the important tasks for Practical Supervisor are, to make sure that the quality of the daily scientific work done by the student is good and that the project is well coordinated and facilitated. Therefore, it becomes important for you to know about constructive feedback, communication, and motivation. Furthermore, the coordination is not just between you and the student but involves also the Principal Supervisor, so it is important to understand and define the roles and responsibilities of the participants. This course aims at developing skills that will strengthen your future work as Practical Supervisor, because you obtain knowledge about, and experiences with, facilitating learning processes and make things work between people. Participants The course is targeted at PhD students in their first part of studies. PhD students who hasn’t yet supervised bachelor/master students in the lab. PhD students with some experiences are welcome. Relevance to graduate programmes The course is relevant to PhD students from the following graduate programs at the Graduate School of Health and Medical Sciences, UCPH: All graduate programs with lab activities where PhD students supervise bachelor/master students. Molecular Mechanisms of Disease Pharmaceutical Sciences (Drug Research Academy) Clinical Cancer Research Language English Form The course is based on theory but focus primarily on practice. The participants will: • Be presented to relevant dilemmas • Discuss essential questions within the course topics • Test relevant exercises/tools • Engage in a Peer Supervision group Participants must expect to be involved during the course. The course just doesn’t talk about expectation, learning, motivation, communication and feedback. It emphasizes practicing all those elements. The purpose is to give participants actual experiences. After the first two course days, participants are asked to apply their new knowledge and skills on their own situation as PhD students. The purpose is make participants aware of their own needs as to align expectations, to be challenged appropriately, to be listened to actively, to get constructive feedback and to feel motivated. When they are aware of these needs, they will know what it takes to become a practical supervisor. After three weeks we meet again for a short follow up. We will discuss and exchange experiences with the principles of Practical Supervision and Peer Supervision. Teachers Kirstine Dahl, Proceskonsulent, KU, SUND, IND.
