Aim and content
This course is free of charge for PhD students at Danish universities (except Copenhagen Business School), and for PhD students at graduate schools in the other Nordic countries. All other participants must pay the course fee.
Anyone can apply for the course, but if you are not a PhD student at a Danish university, you will be placed on the waiting list until enrollment deadline. This also applies to PhD students from Nordic countries. After the enrollment deadline, available seats will be allocated to applicants on the waiting list.
Learning objectives
A student who has met the objectives of the course will be able to:
1. Understand the neurophysiological basis of motor disorders following brain lesions.
2. Understand muscle physiology in relation to changes following inactivity
3. Have insight to the pathophysiology of contractures.
4. Understand and discuss the latest research on the pathology of contractures.
5. Discuss the clinical evaluation of contractures and new possibilities of obtaining objective measures of the function and anatomy of the muscle-tendon-joint complex.
6. Describe and discuss new ideas for prevention and treatment of contractures.
Content
The course will present the latest understanding of how the nervous system, muscles, connective tissue and joints adapt to lack of physical activity and changes in neural activation in relation to disorders of the nervous system. The course will start out with a basic description of the neurophysiology followed by the homeostatic interaction between muscles, nervous system, connective tissue, endocrine system and metabolism as a basis for the understanding of the pathophysiology of contractures. The latest research on the pathology of contractures will be presented by internationally leading experts in the field. The course will then put focus on the clinical evaluation of contractures and new possibilities of obtaining objective measures of the function and anatomy of the muscle-tendon-joint complex. New ideas for prevention and treatment of contractures will be presented. The course will end with a discussion between experts in the field and the course participants on future directions of research on the way to find an effective treatment for contractures.
Participants
Students (M.Sc., M.D, Ph.D.), who are interested in neuroscience, neurological disorders and neurorehabilitation. However the course is only free of charge for PhD students.
