Content
This course addresses fundamental concerns of the current model of health and medical education. For too long a time young academics have been asked to teach without being taught themselves how to tackle this engaging task. Recent advances in pedagogy have focused on the way of improving the transmission of knowledge (e.g. effective communication and speaking techniques); though being of great importance, they do not yet address the issue of passive learning as students are still regarded as mere receivers of contents delivered by teachers. There remains a paucity of consideration for the activating, engaging, and creative functions of teaching – for both the teacher and the student.
This course will underscore the importance of regarding teaching as a social, enjoyable, empowering and creative experience between teachers and students. Throughout the sessions, we will teach/learn (from/to one another) how to embrace playfulness and creativity in teachings – a key component to arousing in students interest in and eagerness for engaging with their own process of learning. We will provide the course attendees with resources for igniting such dynamics in their teachings – in particular, by opening them to a wide realm of aesthetics of teaching (e.g. the use of arts and imaginative spaces). In this regard, the course is designed to be greatly interdisciplinary: It will involve professionals different horizons, all having experience in teaching on these topics (e.g. mindfulness and empowerment). We will cover these from a theoretical perspective (drawn from the education and social sciences literature), but mostly, a practical aspect.
In short, we will (and learn how to) have fun with students while engaging in an empowering process of knowledge sharing.
