Aim and content
This course is free of charge for PhD students at Danish universities (except Copenhagen Business School), and for PhD students at graduate schools in the other Nordic countries. All other participants must pay the course fee.
Anyone can apply for the course, but if you are not a PhD student at a Danish university, you will be placed on the waiting list until enrollment deadline. This also applies to PhD students from Nordic countries. After the enrollment deadline, available seats will be allocated to applicants on the waiting list.
Learning objectives
A student who has met the objectives of the course will be able to:
1. To gain profound theoretical knowledge on basic aspects of influenza viruses
2. To learn how to critically and systematically evaluate the data of scientific literature
3. To understand how evidence based data should be presented in a scientific paper or in a book
4. To present the data of a scientific journal or book in a short and precise manner
5. To discuss/debate scientific literature with fellow PhD students and supervisors
Content
The course covers topics in basic influenza virus science, including taxonomy and multiplication, classical and state of the art diagnostic methods, viral evolution and phylogeny, pathogenesis and virus' interaction with the immune system including principles and use of vaccines and insigth into zoonotic aspects of influenza A viruses.
Participants
PhD students on projects involving virological aspects. Its required that the participants have a basic understanding of biology, but not necessary on veterinary or medical medicine

The course is organised as a weekly workshop. As preparation the participating PhD. students will need to read and review the same scientific paper or a chapter in the Textbook of Influenza. When a chapter in the Textbook of Influenza are scheduled each PhD student will prepare at least five questions for discussion at the workshop, the PhD. students will take turns in presenting scientific papers based on a systematically guideline for reviewing scientific papers. After the presentation there will be a group discussion including both with the other PhD students and the supervisors.
The course is organised as a workshop – every second time as zoom meetings and every second week as a physical meeting.

Seats to PhD students from other Danish universities will be allocated on a first-come, first-served basis and according to the applicable rules.
Applications from other participants will be considered after the last day of enrolment.
Note: All applicants are asked to submit invoice details in case of no-show, late cancellation or obligation to pay the course fee (typically non-PhD students). If you are a PhD student, your participation in the course must be in agreement with your principal supervisor.
