Aim and content
This course is free of charge for PhD students at Danish universities (except Copenhagen Business School), and for PhD students at graduate schools in the other Nordic countries. All other participants must pay the course fee.

Anyone can apply for the course, but if you are not a PhD student at a Danish university, you will be placed on the waiting list until enrollment deadline. This also applies to PhD students from Nordic countries. After the enrollment deadline, available seats will be allocated to applicants on the waiting list.


Learning objectives
A student who has met the objectives of the course will be able to:

1. Understand the epidemiology and attributable burden of headache disorders worldwide.

2. Define systems of care for the clinical management of headache disorders, including how primary and specialist care complements each other.

3. Diagnose headache disorders in accordance with the International Classification of Headache Disorders.

4. Identify red flags in the medical history and/or on physical examination.

5. Perform a neurological examination and provocation experiment on at least five patients with migraine

6. Describe the anatomical and physiological framework by which migraine pathogenesis is understood, i.e. the trigeminovacular system.

7. Understand and describe basic principles of genetic investigations in headache sciences.

8. Understand and describe basic principles of animal models in headache sciences.

9. Understand and describe basic principles of human provocation models in headache sciences.

10. Understand and describe basic principles of structural and functional imaging in headache sciences.

11. Understand and describe basic principles of cortical spreading depression and migraine aura.

12. Understand and demonstrate basic principles of clinical management of headache disorders, including use of evidence-based approaches for acute and preventive treatment.


Content
The course curriculum is identical to one defined by the International Headache Society and will cover the following topics of headache sciences
1. Anatomy and Pathophysiology

2. Epidemiology, Environment, Disability and Genetics

3. Clinical Investigation for Headache

4. Diagnosis and Classification of Headache Disorders according to the International Classification of Headache Disorders, 3rd Edition

6. Therapy

7. Comorbidities, Course and Prognosis of Headache Disorders

8. Miscellaneous


Participants
The course is relevant to PhD students and other researchers who are involved in headache sciences. Knowledge of basic terminology in headache sciences is required.
