Aim and content This is a generic course. This means that the course is reserved for PhD students at the Graduate School of Health and Medical Sciences at UCPH. Anyone can apply for the course, but if you are not a PhD student at the Graduate School, you will be placed on the waiting list until enrollment deadline. After the enrolment deadline, available seats will be allocated to the waiting list. The course is free of charge for PhD students at Danish universities (except Copenhagen Business School), and for PhD students at graduate schools in the other Nordic countries. All other participants must pay the course fee. Strategies for open and reproducible research The EMBO course is focused on everyday aspects of responsible research practices for designing experiments and acquiring and processing data and images. It is delivered by EMBO Solutions GmbH and is designed to teach PhD students how to ensure that their scientific planning, experimental conduct, analysis, and publishing are of high quality, and that their personal conduct, as scientists, is appropriate and responsible. The course was developed by EMBO Press editors and is a full day of training centered around practical small group exercises that encourage participants to reflect on their approach in handling images and support them to learn from their peers and the trainers about the appropriate scientific practice. The participants will use their own research projects as a basis for learning the principles of good scientific conduct, as well as practical strategies to apply these standards in their day-to-day work. They will gain a better understanding of the ‘dos’ and ‘don’ts’ of performing and sharing scientific research and will realize that image integrity is important and valuable not only for the scientific record, but also for their own work and career. Disclaimer: This course is not about using image processing tools like Photoshop, Fiji or ImageJ and what tools are allowed or not. Relevance to graduate programmes The course is relevant to PhD students from the following graduate programmes at the Graduate School of Health and Medical Sciences, UCPH: All graduate programmes Instructor Céline Carret, trained as a molecular biologist and gained her PhD in Montpellier, France working in molecular parasitology. She furthered her academic career in Cambridge, UK and Lisbon, Portugal, mostly focusing on malaria research and genomics. Céline joined EMBO in 2011 and was a senior editor for the publication EMBO Molecular Medicine until October 2020. She is now a professional trainer at EMBO’s non-profit training provider EMBO Solutions GmbH. Course requirement: Participants should have completed Responsible Conduct of Research 1: An Introduction before attending this course. Preparation In order to prepare for the course and actively participate in the exercises and discussions, the students must read five research articles on the topic of publications and image integrity (the articles are open access and will be provided). ECTS: 0,7 Time and date 2 June 2022, 9.00-16.00, with time for lunch and breaks. Venue This course will be conducted online. Registration Please register no later than 29 May 2022. Seats to PhD students from other Danish universities will be allocated on a first-come, first-served basis and according to the applicable rules. Applications from other participants will be considered after the last day of enrolment. Note: All applicants are asked to submit invoice details in case of no-show, late cancellation or obligation to pay the course fee (typically non-PhD students). If you are a PhD student, your participation in the course must be in agreement with your principal supervisor.
