Aim and content This course is free of charge for PhD students at Danish universities (except Copenhagen Business School), and for PhD Students from NorDoc member universities. All other participants must pay the course fee. Anyone can apply for the course, but if you are not a PhD student at a Danish university, you will be placed on the waiting list until enrollment deadline. This also applies to PhD students from NorDoc member universities. After the enrollment deadline, available seats will be allocated to applicants on the waiting list. Long course title: How to incorporate, conduct and optimize patient and public involvement in clinical research Learning objectives A student who has met the objectives of the course will be able to: 1. Identify whether a research project would benefit by patient and public involvement 2. Assess where and when to involve patient, relatives and other stakeholders in a research project 3. Gain knowledge of the different approaches to patient and public involvement in research 4. Explain the merits, challenges and opportunities of patient and public involvement in research 5. Obtain knowledge on how to incorporate, facilitate, conduct, report and disseminate patient and public involvement in the research project 6. Aquire understanding of the ethical aspects of patient and public involvement in research 7. Identify national and international network and working groups for patient and public involvement 8. Demonstrate how to design and incorporate patient and public involvement in own ph.d. project Content Patient and public involvement (PPI) in clinical research entails a process in which researchers invite patients, relatives, clinicians and other stakeholders to take part in research from design to dissemination. The course will introduce the concept of PPI, and provide basic knowledge and practical tools for involving patients and public in clinical research. The course will adopt a classroom approach with involvement of students and their research through discussions, debates, peer review and skill development. The students will be guided through central PPI topics as social values and impact of PPI for stakeholders and researchers, merits, challenges and barriers of PPI, approaches in designing and conducting PPI, ethical considerations and how to evaluate, report and disseminate PPI. To bridge the gap in understanding PPI in clinical research, worksessions will facilitate dialog among students in answering questions regarding how, who and when to conduct PPI. Finally, the students will present and discuss how they would incorporate PPI in their own research with reflection on relevant PPI considerations .
