Aim and content
Learning objectives
A student who has met the objectives of the course will be able to:
1.Describe the state-of-the-art for research into proteins, stem cells, metabolism, and bioengineering
2.Review topics of interest within these research areas
3.Discuss important questions within these research areas
4.Develop ideas for collaborative projects within these research areas
Content
Recent rapid and extraordinary technological advances in molecular and cellular biology have led to unprecedented understanding of biomedicine and biotechnology. Translating this knowledge into new clinical procedures, treatments and bioprocesses requires a deeper understanding of disease-related proteins and their function, stem cell biology, metabolic regulation, and cell factory design.
The course brings together a group of experienced researchers to introduce a broad spectrum of research in biomedicine and biotechnology. Teachers will explain their current research and the cellular, molecular, and computational approaches used to investigate proteins, stem cells, metabolism and synthetic biology. Students will be introduced to the expertise and excellence in these research fields in the Greater Copenhagen area through interaction with leading scientists. The course will encourage participants to develop interdisciplinary and collaborative research ideas.

Participants
Ph. D. –level students with a B.Sc. and/or M.Sc. degree in any biological science or chemistry may apply. The course is limited to 40 participants in total.
Note that a version of this course is offered to both MSc and PhD students. It is also part of the Copenhagen Bioscience PhD pre-doc curriculum. All students attend seminars together, but different assignments are set for MSc and PhD to ensure that the course is appropriate for different academic levels.

Students will participate in interactive seminars given by researchers from the Novo Nordisk Foundation Center for Protein Research, the Novo Nordisk Foundation Center for Basic Metabolic Research and the Novo Nordisk Foundation Center for Stem Cell Medicine at the University of Copenhagen; and the Novo Nordisk Foundation Center for Biosustainability at the Technical University of Denmark. The seminars will allow time for questions and discussion. PhD students then write an essay about topics they find interesting within the research areas presented, and meet Group Leaders whose work they are interested in for tutorials. Assessment is based on the essay and participation at the seminars.
