Aim and content
This is a generic course. This means that the course is reserved for PhD students at the Graduate School of Health and Medical Sciences at UCPH.

Anyone can apply for the course, but if you are not a PhD student at the Graduate School, you will be placed on the waiting list until enrollment deadline. After the enrolment deadline, available seats will be allocated to the waiting list.

The course is free of charge for PhD students at Danish universities (except Copenhagen Business School), and for PhD students at NorDoc member universities. All other participants must pay the course fee.

Learning objectives

Students who have met the objectives of the course will be able to:

1. Respond suitably to the examiners’ questions in the PhD Viva
2. Have insight into what questions will be asked
3. Be prepared to deal with potentially problematic areas
4. Effectively use discussions skills to elaborate the dialogue with the examiners
5. Consider all aspects that could influence the Viva delivery and performance

Content

Questions: those to ask yourself, your supervisor and your colleagues long before the actual Viva, for example: How do you respond to criticism? Do the examiners know/like each other? What would you do differently if you were to repeat your research? and, most importantly, How have you contributed to the world of research? We’ll also look at how to answer succinctly; how to handle difficult questions; how to agree and disagree; how to be courteous but assertive; how to give your voice attitude; what to do if you don’t understand what’s been said; and, just in case things go wrong, some language lifesavers.

Participants

PhD students nearing their PhD defence with Results/Findings to present, discuss and defend.
