Aim and content This is a generic course. This means that the course is reserved for PhD students at the Graduate School of Health and Medical Sciences at UCPH. Anyone can apply for the course, but if you are not a PhD student at the Graduate School, you will be placed on the waiting list until enrollment deadline. After the enrolment deadline, available seats will be allocated to the waiting list. The course is free of charge for PhD students at Danish universities (except Copenhagen Business School), and for PhD students at NorDoc member universities. All other participants must pay the course fee. Learning objectives A student who has met the objectives of the course will be able to: 1. Identify personal communication patterns 2. Understand rhetorical and performative principles 3. Apply the obtained knowledge on own cases 4. Use appropriate feedback techniques Content The aim of this course is to improve the oral communication capacity of the individual participant, so that you are better equipped for presentations, teaching activities, communication to peers or external collaboration partners, foundations and decision-makers, etc. The course will cover aspects such as use of voice, body language, storytelling technique, dramaturgical methods for building a presentation, the use of visual instruments, structural tools and feedback elements. The course emphasizes the practical element of the dissemination, and is based on the PhD students' own research. Case-based work is carried out where you work with own cases – i.e. communication tasks you are about to solve. In this way, the course taps into a busy everyday life and serves as preparation for a given presentation activity. It should be pointed out that although the teaching is based on rhetorical and performative disciplines, it is not a question of making the participant an actor – but strengthening your performative preparedness (e.g. handling nervousness) skills and not least impact. This is a recurrent course. I would say it's one of the most useful courses I've taken during my PhD!” Participants Participants should have a presentation task to solve which may span everything from classroom teaching, scientific presentation for peers or at conferences, or PhD defense. Before the start of the course, each participants is asked to send a brief description of their own communicative challenges and purpose of participating in the course (the personal learning goal). Relevance to graduate programmes The course is relevant to PhD students from the following graduate programmes at the Graduate School of Health and Medical Sciences, UCPH: All graduate programmes Language English or Danish, dependent on participants Form The course alternates between presentations, workshops, exercises, student presentations, feedback, and individual coaching. Prior to the course, the students receive a short video where they get a brief introduction to the course. The participants are expected to prepare a short oral presentation (duration max. 5 min.) prior to course. The topic must be either a presentation of the own research project in general or of a central part of the own PhD project. It is up to the participant whether they use presentation tools like PowerPoint or free oral presentation. The presentation must comprise start, middle and end and target the other course participants, i.e. fellow PhD students not necessarily familiar with the topic. The participants will get feedback on their own presentations and will play an active role in given feedback to their peers.
