Aim and content
This is a generic course. This means that the course is reserved for PhD students at the Graduate School of Health and Medical Sciences at UCPH.
Anyone can apply for the course, but if you are not a PhD student at the Graduate School, you will be placed on the waiting list until enrollment deadline. After the enrollment deadline, available seats will be allocated to the waiting list.
The course is free of charge for PhD students at Danish universities (except Copenhagen Business School), and for PhD students at NorDoc member universities. All other participants must pay the course fee.
Learning objectives
A student who has met the objectives of the course will be able to:
1. Understand how to design a field-based study
2. Identify different data collection techniques, and gain competences on how to store, transport, curate and manage data sampled in the field
3. Gain knowledge regarding practical components associated with field-based data collection, including permit applications, ethics, identify and mitigate risks and challenges during fieldwork
4. Acquire competences in statistical design of field-based studies
5. Gain an insight into various communication styles needed when setting up field-based studies
Content
This intensive 5-day PhD course will provide the attendees with a broad insight into the knowledge and skills needed to design a field-based study. This includes an insight into statistical study design and data collection techniques as well as knowledge on how to store, transport, curate and manage data collected in the field. The course will also provide the attendees with an insight into research, export and import permit application processes and ethics associated with collection of fieldwork data. Moreover, the course will make the attendees aware of the intercultural, religious, political differences when conducting fieldwork away from home, give a basic knowledge on first aid and how to perform a risk assessment. Finally, the attendees will obtain an insight into different styles of communication needed depending on the audience when setting up and executing fieldwork projects.
During the course, the attendees will use the gained knowledge to update their own PhD project’s study design, fieldwork and data collection procedure; the course will end by the students presenting how they have applied the gained knowledge in the preparation for their own project.
Participants
The target group for this course are PhD students wanting a broad knowledge on how to prepare for collecting scientific data in the field, making them ready to collect data for their own PhD project. No prior qualifications are needed to participate.
Relevance to graduate programmes
The course is relevant to PhD students from the following graduate programmes at the Graduate School of Health and Medical Sciences, UCPH:
Molecular Bacteriology and Infection
Life, Earth and Environmental Sciences
Language
English
Form
The course will encompass lectures, exercises, group work and individual work on one’s own project as a case, with both input from teachers and fellow PhD-students, during a week from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM.
