Aim and content This course is free of charge for PhD students at Danish universities (except Copenhagen Business School), and for PhD Students from NorDoc member universities. All other participants must pay the course fee. Anyone can apply for the course, but if you are not a PhD student at a Danish university, you will be placed on the waiting list until enrollment deadline. This also applies to PhD students from NorDoc member universities. After the enrollment deadline, available seats will be allocated to applicants on the waiting list. Learning objectives A student who has met the objectives of the course will be able to: 1. Describe the epidemiology of the major classes of psychiatric disorders 2. Describe the pros and cons of different epidemiological study designs in psychiatry 3. Have insight to design their own epidemiological study within psychiatry 4. Read and critically assess published epidemiological studies in the field of psychiatry Content The course will provide an overview of psychiatric epidemiology through a mix of methodology and cases. While it is not necessary to have a prior knowledge of epidemiology, the course should not be expected to provide a full introduction to all areas of epidemiology. Regarding methodology, the course will provide a quick introduction to the fields of the hierarchy of evidence, confounder control, psychometry, randomized trials, systematic reviews and meta-analyses, case-control and cohort studies, genetic approaches to epidemiology, register-based research, big data, and machine learning. In terms of psychiatric fields, these methodological approaches will be followed up with epidemiology-lectures regarding psychiatric diagnoses, child & adolescent psychiatry, adult psychiatry, affective disorders, psychotic disorders, substance abuse, suicide, recovery, and at least one specific childhood psychiatric disorder. Participants The course is intended for PhD-students working within the field of psychiatry. All PhD-students in the field will benefit from the course, but it is particularly targeted at students in the early-to-middle phase of their PhD-project. Relevance to graduate programmes The course is relevant to PhD students from the following graduate programmes at the Graduate School of Health and Medical Sciences, UCPH: - Psychiatry - Public Health and Epidemiology - Neuroscience Language The course will be provided in English if there are non-Danish speaking participants. Otherwise, the course will be provided in Danish. Form Combination of lectures, group work, discussions, and exercises. Minimal workload, if any, will be expected outside of the scheduled hours. Dates September 12th to September 15th, 2023, with four full days of teaching. Course location Gentofte Hospital. Registration Please register before August 15th, 2023 Expected frequency Annually. Seats to PhD students from other Danish universities will be allocated on a first-come, first-served basis and according to the applicable rules. Applications from other participants will be considered after the last day of enrolment. Note: All applicants are asked to submit invoice details in case of no-show, late cancellation or obligation to pay the course fee (typically non-PhD students).
