Aim and content

This course is free of charge for PhD students at Danish universities (except Copenhagen Business School), and for PhD Students from NorDoc member universities. All other participants must pay the course fee.

Anyone can apply for the course, but if you are not a PhD student at a Danish university, you will be placed on the waiting list until enrollment deadline. This also applies to PhD students from NorDoc member universities. After the enrollment deadline, available seats will be allocated to applicants on the waiting list.

Learning objectives

A student who has met the objectives of the course will be able to:

1. The student will obtain knowledge about the research topics covered within the course. These topics cover some of the central and key research topics at Xlab and at ISMC and the student will therefore obtain a broad insight into the reseach areas and focus of these two labs

2. The student will be trained in presenting and subsequently defending their own data. The student will be challenged by a panel of senior researchers and fellow students and will gain insight into being challenged in front of a "friendly" audience.

3. The student will gain insight into the breadth of scientific designs and their application in preclinical as well as a clinical reseach.

4. The student will gain insight into key methodologies and their applications and see these in the perspective of pre clinical as well as clinical research, and how this can be made operational to address a research question.

Content

The course will be a 6 day course focusing on the primary research topics in a series of consecutive lectures within the topics listed below. The lectures will, as indicated in the program, run from 8.30 to 12.30 and then there will be a presentation and group work from 17.00 to 20.00.

Topics covered:
- The Exercising Horse: Cardiac benefits and side-effects
- Interplay between cardiovascular activity and muscular energy use during exercise in humans
- Use of ultrasonography and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in exercise research
- Genomic analysis, Exercise and Polygenetic susceptibility to metabolic disease
- Exercise and the brain
- Aging, muscle-function and physical training
- Appetite control, Exercise and Cardio-metabolic Health
- Glucose and its fate in the Human Body with Exercise
- Circadian clock and musculoskeletal function
- Mitochondrial metabolism in organs, with exercise and in disease
- Understanding the mechanical structures of connective tissue: Influence of exercise and training
- Athletes and Sports Medicine: Clinical challenges and research
- Translational approach to understanding of acute muscle injury and its rehabilitation
- Treatment of sports related overuse injuries

The students will give 10 min presentations of their own data followed by 5 min discussion with a panel of the participating teachers, scientists etc. asking questions. Furthermore, students will work in groups over the five first days to design and explain a new research project, that is then presented by the group for all participants and subsequently discussed, with 45 min allocated to presentation and discussion for each of the four groups.

Participants

The participants will be PhD-students affiliated to Xlab at BMI, SUND and/or Institute of Sports Medicine at BBH and/or visiting PhD-students. In addition the course will be open to other phD-students.
We will expect that some expenses to travelling and lodging and food will be charged to external participants, currently we expect that the external PhD-students will pay their own airfare.

Relevance to graduate programmes

The course is relevant to PhD students from the following graduate programmes at the Graduate School of Health and Medical Sciences, UCPH:

Basic and Clinical Research in Musculoskeletal Sciences

Basic Metabolic Research

Cardiovascular Research

Language

English

Form

The course will consist of lectures, oral presentations, group work and some broader science.
It is expected that approximately 25 selected papers are read prior to the course start.
